At every restaurant I have ever worked in, and believe me, I have worked in more than a few, there is always a never-ending feud between the servers and the bartenders. Why the hostility? As a bartender, I have a few choice words I could say about this subject matter, but I will refrain because then I would lose most of you. To be fair, I will attempt to represent both parties on this account. Isn’t it time that we all just got along? Our jobs would be much easier and more fun that way.
Servers Viewpoint:
All bartenders are egotistical maniacs who foolishly and arrogantly think that they are gods. (How am I doing so far?) Just because bartenders mix a few liquids and pop open a beer does not give them the authority to be such righteous assholes. As soon as they put that gate down, they don their crown and become royal jerks. They feel that the bar is their kingdom and that servers are just indentured servants working for them. Not only do they make more money than servers |
do, none of those lazy bastards ever roll silverware or do side work.
Even though servers tip bartenders out for pouring a few drinks, they still expect servers to be at their beck and call. “Can you grab my food from the window?” “Check on my...... and/or I need bread for one.” How about tipping out the server who is your personal valet and errand girl because she has the fortune of being in the bar that shift? I need ice. I need a manager. I need. I need. I need. At the end of the shift, the bartender conveniently forgets all those needs you fulfilled as they greedily watch you hand over the money they made.
There are other benefits to being a bartender as well. Bartenders don’t have to put up with screaming children running around the tables like horses at the Kentucky Derby. They don’t have to deal with being cut after having one miserable table, hence earning three dollars for a four hour shift. Amazingly, they seem oblivious to the obvious fact that they are immune |
